Knowledge discovery in healthcare information systems with process mining

Healthcare information systems (HIS) are treasure troves of data. Every clinical action—from patient visits and diagnostic tests to treatments and administrative tasks—leaves a digital footprint. But how can we transform this data into actionable insights for better patient care and more efficient healthcare delivery? One powerful answer is process mining.

At the Information Society Conference (IS 2024), we presented how process mining techniques can be applied in the healthcare domain to uncover patterns, identify inefficiencies, and support data-driven decision-making.

What is Process Mining?

Process mining is an interdisciplinary approach that blends data science and business process management. It uses event logs stored in information systems to reconstruct, analyze, and improve real-world processes. Instead of relying solely on documented protocols or interviews, process mining shows what actually happens, based on recorded data.

ABSTRACT

Process mining is a synonym for a multitude of techniques and technologies that enable the automatic discovery of knowledge about processes based on data obtained from the company’s information system. The paper presents the basics of process mining, the importance of event logs and advanced algorithms for detection, compliance verification and process improvements. The central part of the paper is a demonstration of the capabilities of modern tools for process mining, which are based on the event log obtained from the healthcare information system and are as follows: automated process discovery, process performance mining, compliance checking, and variant analysis of implemented processes.

POVZETEK

Rudarjenje procesov je sinonim za množico tehnik in tehnologij, ki omogočajo avtomatsko odkrivanje znanja o procesih neposredno, na osnovi podatkov, ki so pridobljeni iz informacijskega sistema podjetja. V prispevku so predstavljene osnove rudarjenja procesov, pomen dnevnikov dogodkov in naprednih algoritmov za odkrivanje, preverjanje skladnosti in izboljšave procesov. Osrednji del prispevka je demonstracija zmožnosti sodobnih orodij za rudarjenje procesov, ki temeljijo na dnevniku dogodkov, pridobljenem iz zdravstvenega informacijskega sistema in so sledeče: avtomatizirano odkrivanje procesov, rudarjenje uspešnosti procesov, preverjanje skladnosti in analiza različic izvajanih procesov.
