I’ve presented a professional article on the current and future capabilities of process mining on the central Slovenian informatics event “Dnevi Slovenske Informatike DSI’ 2021” which was held in Portorož, Slovenia.

Abstract of the paper (in Slovenian):
Upravljanje poslovnih procesov je uveljavljena metodologija, katere poglavitni namen je učinkovito izboljšanje organizacijskih procesov z uporabo različnih tehnik in tehnologij, ki v veliki meri temeljijo na modelih procesov. Predpogoj za uspešno upravljanje poslovnih procesov so veljavni modeli procesov, kar pa je v praksi pogosto težko doseči, saj so le ti, pogosto zaradi človeških dejavnikov, nepopolni, nepravilni oziroma zastareli.
Alternativni oziroma komplementarni pristop, ki se v zadnjih letih uveljavlja na področju upravljanja poslovnih procesov, je zato na realnih podatkih temelječe upravljanje procesov, ki jih, predvsem v obliki dnevnikov dogodkov, generirajo poslovne informacijske rešitve. Rudarjenje procesov je sinonim za množico tehnik in tehnologij, ki omogočajo avtomatsko generiranje in vizualizacijo modelov procesov na osnovi dnevnikov dogodkov, z njihovo pomočjo pa je možno procese odkrivati, analizirati, preverjati skladnost izvajanih procesov in odkrivati morebitna odstopanja.
V prispevku bomo predstavili in umestili rudarjenje procesov v življenjski cikel upravljanja poslovnih procesov, na osnovi korakov algoritma Alfa pa bo pojasnjen postopek avtomatskega oblikovanja modela procesa iz podatkov sistemskega dnevnika. Osrednji del prispevka je namenjen predstavitvi zmožnosti sodobnih rešitev za rudarjenje procesov, ki postajajo v sodobnih poslovnih okoljih nepogrešljiv člen poslovne analitike, z njihovo pomočjo pa je možno sprejemati natančne procesne oziroma poslovne odločitve, ki temeljijo na realnih operativnih podatkih.

Business process management is an established methodology whose main purpose is to effectively improve organisational processes using a variety of techniques and technologies that are largely based on process models. A precondition for successful business process management are valid process models, which is often difficult to achieve in practice, as they are, due to human factors, incomplete, incorrect or outdated.
An alternative or complementary approach, which has been established in recent years in the field of business process management, is therefore on real data based process management, where the data is primary obtained in the form of event logs generated by business information systems. Process mining is a synonym for a multitude of techniques and technologies that enable automatic generation and visualisation of process models based on event logs. By applying process mining it is possible to detect processes, analyse them, check the compliance of implemented processes and detect possible deviations.
In this paper, we present and position process mining in the business process management life-cycle. Based on the steps of the Alpha algorithm, the process of automatically creating a process model from system log data is explained. The central part of the paper is intended to present the capabilities of modern process mining tools, which are becoming an indispensable part of business analytics in modern business environments. By applying them it is possible to make precise process or business decisions based on real operational data.
